2006 SUBARU WRX STI

Impreza WRX STi is MOTOR's Bang for your Bucks winner

The Subaru Impreza WRX STi has won MOTOR magazine's gruelling 2005 Bang for your Bucks contest.

Impreza WRX STi topped a heavyweight list of 25 performance cars including the Porsche Boxster S, BMW 330i, HSV GTO Coupe, Volkswagen Golf GTI, Mitsubishi Lancer EVO VIII and FPV Falcon GT.

Among STi's achievements was the fastest lap time of all the cars at Wakefield Park raceway, NSW - 1 minute 10.12 seconds.

MOTOR says: "Punt the thing hard and it rewards you like very few other cars. Learn to trust it and it'll match you dollar-for-dollar as it ratchets up the scale from hooligan to complete loony.

"Simply, there is nothing in this comparison that gives quite the same bang for the same buck. Oh sure, some get awfully close (and are better road cars) but when the chips are down, the STi always goes that little bit further and, therefore, takes home the silverware."

The car also won the $50-$80k sub-category, ahead of Mitsubishi Lancer EVO VIII, HSV Clubsport DTS and FPV F6 Typhoon. MOTOR said: "All hail the WRX STi in the $50-$80k category; the toughest BFYB category of the lot has a new king."

Since 1994, Subaru has won BFYB outright four times - more than any other brand.

Impreza WRX won in 1998 and 1999. Impreza WRX STi won in 2002 and now in 2005.

The event includes road and racetrack testing over two days, including 0-100km/h times, 0-400 metres and top speed.

According to MOTOR editor Jesse Taylor, the event is designed to find "the best-value road-rocket in Australia..."

Refinements to Model Year 2005 Impreza WRX STi include a driver control centre differential (DCCD) - allowing the driver to literally "dial up" the preferred torque split, when in manual mode, or opt for automatic mode.

A new front helical limited slip differential was added too.

Steering response also benefits from a "cannon mount" steering rack housing.
